A follow-up to commit 309461e70e.
Thanks cloph for the := immediate assignment idea. Additionally, no
need to spawn inner shells to cd and pwd.
On my system, running 'make firebird.clean && time make firebird',
without the patch, I see
real 8m15.444s
user 0m0.109s
sys 0m0.062s
and with the patch:
real 2m48.370s
user 0m0.015s
sys 0m0.015s
